The simply named Chronicles of Battle is an ancient tome, dating back to the first century of the Bloodstained Aeon. It is not one single work of literature, but a collection of diary excerpts, personal logs, and battle reports from wars in Asivis with Nherru. Most of the entries were not written explicitly for the Chronicles, but were added over time by the (presumably) various owners of the tome.
While it is unclear who most of the contributors were, or who began the project, the last person to submit to the book was a former merchant from Kyrosos named Nassandar who was conscripted into the army, but deserted the first chance he got and stowed away in a galleon bound for Orath. The merchant found the tome on the body of a dying comrade, and some of the writings within were enough to terrify him into abandoning his country and fleeing. Nassander's fate is not recorded, unfortunately, yet the book somehow survived the centuries between the fall of Nherru and the rise of Kyrosos as the dominant power on Xothu. It is known that another merchant acquired the book and sold it at great profit to one of the libraries of Cort Baraget where it remains to this day.
The Chronicles have become famous, and are one of the only sources of solid information regarding Nherru's war prior to the shattering of the Eye of Nherru and the early decades of the Bloodstained Aeon. The largest libraries on Xothu all have complete copies of the Chronicles, and the Arcane Sanctum at Ghyrak has a copy completely transcribed into Bluetongue (this is, in fact, rather odd, as the library there generally specialises in tomes of magical significance.) The Booklords, of course, have long had the Chronicles in their archives, and it is rumoured that they even have pages that have been lost from the original tome.
Excerpts:
May my father and masters forgive me for the long years I have lamented my lack of swordmanship and inability to string a bow, for now in what I fear to be my last moments do I realise the great gift I have been given. Others who survive may one day cherish these words that I now write, faithfully recording the details of our impending defeat by the butchers. Should my quill run dry, I shall sate it with my own blood, and not rest until all that has transpired here rests between these pages.
-Portion of a passage detailing the rout of a legion defending a village in Asivis against the forces of the Children of Nherru. Believed to be the original entry in the Chronicles, in spite of being in the middle of the hefty tome. Also of note is that there were no further entries by this particular chronicler.
