Southern Orcs

Overview:

Southern Orcs are the most thoroughly disliked Orcish race. They are warlike, tribal, green skinned, and not known for being exceptionally intelligent. They harbour no fondness for their northern counterparts, and though culturally they dislike the Night Orcs (considering them to be far too caught up in building things and wasting time with their "pointless magic"), they greatly enjoy making war on them when they get the chance.

They are called Southern Orcs, in spite of residing mostly in the northeastern parts of Nova, because when they were discovered by explorers from Asivis, the explorers had travelled south of Asivis to reach them.

Their men and women are considered equal for the most part, though women never become chieftains, and the men never have anything to do with the midwives' profession.

By most other races, Southern Orcs are usually simply called "Orcs", and very occasionally "Southies".

Breeding:

Most texts on Southern Orcs simply summarise this section with the quip "yes, plenty of this".

Given the relatively short life span of the Orcish race as a whole, a Southern Orc is usually considered battle-worthy by age 10, and will have children by as early as 14. A child will be raised by midwives until the age of 5, at which point they're regarded as being well able to feed and take care of themselves in general, and their care is given over to their tribe at large. They do not partner for life (though tribal chieftains occasionally have personal harems), and the females give birth to only one child at a time.

Diet:

Southern Orcs almost exclusively eat meat, finding fruit and vegetables to be quite unpleasant. The fresher the meat, the better, and they are often known to simply eat it raw.

Education:

Aside from basic survival and the arts of war, what little knowlege Southern Orcs share with each other is tended and passed along by their Shamans.

They domesticate no animals, but keep as many sheep, cattle, rabbits, anything edible that they can. Usually these are in fields bordered by primitive fences.

Language:

Orcish is a particularly harsh and simple languge, there are almost no adjectives. For the most part, Orcs only learn the languages of others to taunt them in battle, lacking the mental fortitude for scholarly study of linguistics.

Magic:

Magic among Southern Orcs is uncommon, and usually not particularly potent. Their shamans are generally, though not always capable of magic, and battle mages are not unheard of. If so inclined their shamans may enable their blacksmiths to imbue power into weapons and armour.

Society:

Southern Orcs live in tribes.
