The Colossus of Zanalia is a gigantic rock golem, created aeons ago by the mages of the city state of Zanalia. It took fifty years to complete (most of that time spent in working out the correct spells) and was built with the intention of being used as a protector for the city against the Children of Blood. However, the mages of Zanalia perhaps put too much effort into shaping its mind, as it awakened with a distinct conscience, personality, and aversion to violence. When told of what it was to do, it was mortified at the thought of killing, and stomped off to sulk on the coastline. Zanalia was promptly subjugated by Nherru, and later occupied by Kyrosos before the city was abandoned and left to decay sometime during the Era of Expansion.

For centuries, the Colossus was buried under silt and sand after a particularly violent hurricane swept over the area. Natural erosion finally swept the last of its cover away sometime around the year 2000 A.S. though it remained motionless for another three hundred years, its legs crossed and its chin resting on its hand. The Colossus finally stirred in 2316 A.S. though it remained on what is still known as the Zanalian Coast. To this day, it spends its time building gigantic sandcastles on the beach, and does not seem to mind when storms wash them away. It does not appear to object to company, though it never acknowledges the presence of others.
